Battery storage recruitment in Sweden
We recruit across battery storage in Sweden, a market that grew from just over 100MW of large-scale capacity in 2022 to roughly 1.2GW, close to five per cent of national peak load. Across all segments Sweden holds around 2.8GWh, having added 1.2GWh in 2025 alone.
Swedish storage did not start from a wholesale market. It started from frequency and balancing, and that history still shapes everything. What has changed is that the businesses here have stopped outsourcing the commercial side and started building it themselves.

The niches inside the niche
Battery storage is not one market
Developers, owners, optimisers, integrators and the consultancies advising all of them hire from separate pools. Whichever one you sit in, the hiring problem next door is not your hiring problem.
- Developers and owner operators
- You are competing for grid, planning and delivery people against solar and wind, and increasingly against data centres. The person who can move a site through the connections process is worth more to you than another developer.
- Optimisers and route to market
- The smallest and most expensive pool in the sector. A trader who genuinely understands storage rather than gas or power is a short list in any country, and everyone on it already knows what they are worth.
- EPC, integration and commissioning
- Where programmes actually slip. Commissioning sits in the gap between the developer, the integrator and the network operator, which is why it stays nobody’s job until the energisation date moves.
- Technology and OEM
- Controls, power conversion and SCADA engineering, plus the commercial people who sell into developers. It hires like a hardware business, which is why it loses candidates to sectors that pay on the same cycle.
- Consultancy and owner’s engineer
- The specialist grid and HV design engineers sit here rather than with the asset owners, which is why the same role appears in six cities at once when one firm needs another.
Our Approach
How we work here
Recruitment fundamentals travel. Markets do not. Sweden is the clearest example anywhere of a market building quantitative and trading capability in-house rather than buying it, across completely different business models at the same time. That means a storage brief here is competing for the same people as demand-response aggregators and retail energy businesses, not only other battery owners, and pricing a role against other developers alone will lose.
Before you brief anyone
Have you decided build or buy?
Storage is the one sector where the hardest hire depends on a decision the business has usually already made without calling it a decision. Do you run your own trading and optimisation, or do you contract route to market and manage the relationship?
The two answers need completely different people. One needs quantitative analysts, traders and the risk and treasury function around them. The other needs a commercial lead who can negotiate a toll or an offtake with an optimiser and hold them to it.
Both are legitimate and the market has not settled on either. What costs money is briefing for one while the business is actually doing the other, which happens more often than you would expect when the strategy changed and the job description did not.
Worth agreeing before anyone is approached: which model you are in, whether that is a permanent choice or a stage, and what you are asking this hire to build rather than run.
Why Hiring Here Is Different
Why hiring here is different from anywhere else
Everybody is building a trading desk, and not all of them own batteries.
Talent Scarcity
Where the pressure is right now
Quantitative power traders and optimisation engineers. The defining Swedish shortage, and the competition is broader than it looks: developers, demand-response aggregators and retail energy businesses are all hiring the same profile simultaneously. Stochastic optimisation, linear programming and reinforcement learning are being asked for by name.
Operational traders who can supervise an algorithm. A distinct role from the quantitative one and frequently confused with it. Monitoring live algorithmic execution across day-ahead, ancillary and intraday markets is an operations job with a trading floor’s tolerance for error, and very few people have done exactly that.
Asset managers who can work alongside a trading desk. Swedish employers are explicit in their own adverts that the asset manager sits beside optimisation and trading rather than in a separate technical silo. That is a broader profile than a conventional technical asset manager and the pool is correspondingly smaller.
Frequency and balancing market specialists. The foundation this market was built on and still commercially important, but worth being honest that the centre of gravity is moving towards multi-market optimisation.
Anything that has run past seven weeks. A straightforward Swedish storage hire closes in four to six. Past that the brief is usually the problem rather than the market, and here the most common problem is a package benchmarked against other battery businesses rather than against the aggregators and retailers competing for the same person.

Tenfold growth in three yearsLarge-scale battery capacity in Sweden stood at roughly 1.2GW in May 2026, close to five per cent of the country’s peak grid load, having grown from just over 100MW in 2022 to around 1,000MW during 2025. Batteries are now taking on roles that hydropower used to hold in the Swedish grid.

Seventh in the EU by installed energy capacityAcross all segments, including household and commercial batteries, Sweden holds around 2.8GWh of installed battery storage, having added 1.2GWh during 2025, a 70% year-on-year rise that places it seventh in the European Union. That is a different measure from the large-scale power figure and the two should not be netted against each other.

The market grew out of frequency, not wholesaleUnlike Britain or Spain, Swedish storage was built to serve frequency and balancing markets rather than wholesale arbitrage, and that history still shapes the revenue stack and the skills base. The shift towards genuine multi-market optimisation is what is driving the current hiring rather than the installed capacity figures.

TalentPilot
We would rather you needed us less
Most agencies are built so that you call them again. The model only works while hiring stays hard for you, which means nobody selling it has much reason to make it easier.
We took the opposite bet, and not only out of principle. A business that hires well on its own stays a client for years and brings us the roles that are genuinely difficult. A business that depends on an agency resents every invoice and leaves the first time somebody undercuts us. The second kind of relationship is worth less and lasts less long.
So we built TalentPilot. Twenty-one tools across planning, attracting, hiring and keeping people: map the roles before they become urgent, see where the people actually are, write the advert properly, run a consistent interview, and know which of your new starters is at risk before they resign.
And one thing almost nobody has. Every week, the real reasons candidates said no. Not a summary. The actual objections: the money, the location, the counter-offer, the part of the role that put them off. Most businesses never find out, which is why they keep making the same hire the same way.
Everything on this page is one market on one date. Our clients see their own, continuously.
What is left for us is the work that genuinely needs a search. That is the part we are good at, and the part worth paying for.
See how TalentPilot worksHow a search runs
You see it as we see it
- Before we start
- The brief and the target companies are agreed in writing. You know which businesses we are approaching and which we are not, before anyone is contacted.
- Every week
- The outreach, the response levels, where each person sits in the process, and the reasons anyone said no. The money, the location, the counter-offer, the part of the role that put them off.
- When it stalls
- You hear it from us. A search that has gone quiet is a conversation about the brief, not a report we delay until you ask.
What happens when you get in touch
A first call is a conversation about your hiring plan. Half an hour, with the consultant who runs this market for us.
We will tell you what we are seeing in your part of it: where the difficulty sits, which roles are moving and what people are actually being paid. You get that whether you decide to work with us or not.
If there is something we can help with, we will say what it would take and roughly how long. If there isn't, we will say so and point you at whoever is better placed.
No slide deck, no pitch, and nobody will chase you afterwards.
If you work in this market
What we are seeing from the other side
The same searches, read from the candidate side.
- Quants and optimisation engineers
- Three different kinds of business are hiring your profile in Sweden at once: battery developers, aggregators and retail energy companies. That is unusual and it means you have genuine choice about what kind of company you join rather than only which battery.
- Operational traders
- Supervising live algorithmic execution is a distinct discipline from building the models, and Swedish employers advertise the two separately. Be clear which one you are, because being treated as the other is how people end up in the wrong job.
- Asset managers
- The role here sits beside the trading desk rather than apart from it, and adverts say so explicitly. If you can hold a commercial conversation as well as a technical one, that is worth stating first.
- Where it leads
- Trading and optimisation into commercial leadership, asset management into portfolio roles, and either into general management at a business whose whole model is the desk. Sweden is building this capability now, which is the better time to join it.
Questions
Clear answers for the next step.
What battery storage roles do you recruit for in Sweden?
Quantitative trading and optimisation, operational trading, asset management, development and grid connection, electrical engineering, construction and project management, and commissioning.
Is Sweden building trading capability in-house or buying it?
Building it, clearly and across business models. One developer of around seventy people has ten live vacancies with four inside the commercial function. A demand-response aggregator is scaling a desk. A retail energy business runs a standing internal trading department. Three different models, the same decision.
Who are we competing with for quantitative people?
Not only other battery businesses. Aggregators and retail energy companies want the same profile and often have more scope to bring someone in at a junior level and develop them. Benchmarking a package against storage developers alone is the most common reason these searches stall here.
How big is Swedish storage?
Roughly 1.2GW of large-scale capacity, close to five per cent of national peak load, up from just over 100MW in 2022. Across all segments including household batteries, around 2.8GWh, with 1.2GWh added in 2025 alone, which places Sweden seventh in the European Union.
Why does it matter that Sweden started from frequency markets?
Because the domestic skills base reflects it. The expertise here is in balancing and frequency rather than wholesale arbitrage, and the market is moving towards multi-market optimisation. That gap between what people have done and what businesses now need is exactly what is driving the current hiring.
