Battery storage recruitment · Spain

Battery storage recruitment in Spain

We recruit across battery storage in Spain, a market that has barely started building and has an enormous amount of paper behind it. Batteries reached 221MW in May 2026, up from 29MW at the end of 2025. Behind that sit more than 24GW authorised or under construction and a further 15GW in permitting.

A pipeline roughly a hundred and eighty times the size of the built fleet is not a forecast, it is a queue. What matters for hiring is which parts of it convert, and Spain has more reasons than most markets to think a serious share of it will.

The niches inside the niche

Battery storage is not one market

Developers, owners, optimisers, integrators and the consultancies advising all of them hire from separate pools. Whichever one you sit in, the hiring problem next door is not your hiring problem.

Developers and owner operators
You are competing for grid, planning and delivery people against solar and wind, and increasingly against data centres. The person who can move a site through the connections process is worth more to you than another developer.
Optimisers and route to market
The smallest and most expensive pool in the sector. A trader who genuinely understands storage rather than gas or power is a short list in any country, and everyone on it already knows what they are worth.
EPC, integration and commissioning
Where programmes actually slip. Commissioning sits in the gap between the developer, the integrator and the network operator, which is why it stays nobody’s job until the energisation date moves.
Technology and OEM
Controls, power conversion and SCADA engineering, plus the commercial people who sell into developers. It hires like a hardware business, which is why it loses candidates to sectors that pay on the same cycle.
Consultancy and owner’s engineer
The specialist grid and HV design engineers sit here rather than with the asset owners, which is why the same role appears in six cities at once when one firm needs another.

Our Approach

How we work here

Recruitment fundamentals travel. Markets do not. Spain is now hiring storage specialists as their own discipline rather than as an addition to a solar job, which is newer here than most people realise and changes where the scarcity sits: above graduate level, in grid, controls and commercial roles. It is also a market that international battery manufacturers are entering directly, so the competition for those people is not only other developers.

Before you brief anyone

Have you decided build or buy?

Storage is the one sector where the hardest hire depends on a decision the business has usually already made without calling it a decision. Do you run your own trading and optimisation, or do you contract route to market and manage the relationship?

The two answers need completely different people. One needs quantitative analysts, traders and the risk and treasury function around them. The other needs a commercial lead who can negotiate a toll or an offtake with an optimiser and hold them to it.

Both are legitimate and the market has not settled on either. What costs money is briefing for one while the business is actually doing the other, which happens more often than you would expect when the strategy changed and the job description did not.

Worth agreeing before anyone is approached: which model you are in, whether that is a permanent choice or a stage, and what you are asking this hire to build rather than run.

Why Hiring Here Is Different

Why hiring here is different from anywhere else

Spain has just made storage a job in its own right.

For years a Spanish storage role was a line inside a solar job. That has changed, and it changed recently enough that the labour market has not caught up with it. Employers here are now hiring battery storage specialists as their own discipline, and the shortage sits above graduate level, in grid, controls and commercial roles rather than in construction. The scarcity has a cause worth understanding. Spain went from 29MW of batteries at the end of 2025 to 221MW five months later, and has more than 24GW authorised behind that. Almost nobody in the country has run a battery through a full cycle of development, connection, commissioning and operation, because until recently there was almost nothing to run. What makes the competition harder than it looks is who else is hiring. Four international battery and storage manufacturers are recruiting into Spain at the same time, and mostly not for construction: they are taking grid, controls and commercial people. So a Spanish developer is not only bidding against other developers, it is bidding against the businesses that make the equipment, who can generally pay more and offer a career that is not tied to one pipeline. The last thing to know is that a Spanish battery is no longer just a trading asset. Since the blackout, storage has a paid role in holding the grid up, which makes grid interface and voltage control capability commercially valuable rather than merely compliant. That is a different technical hire from the one this market was making two years ago.

Talent Scarcity

Where the pressure is right now

Grid interface and voltage control engineering. The scarcest skill in Spanish storage and one that barely existed here two years ago. Certifying a battery for dynamic voltage control is a specific, tested process and the people who have completed it are numbered in dozens rather than hundreds.

Controls and SCADA engineering on storage specifically. Where the international manufacturers entering Spain are recruiting hardest, which means a developer competing for these people is bidding against businesses with deeper pockets and a product rather than a pipeline behind them.

Commercial and route to market people who understand storage. A new discipline in Spain rather than a transferred one. The capacity mechanism, the voltage control service and merchant arbitrage are three different revenue conversations and very few people here have had all three.

Anyone who has taken a battery from permit to energisation in Spain. With 221MW built and 24GW authorised, that experience is close to unobtainable domestically. Most businesses will have to import it or grow it, and the ones that decide which now will be ahead of the ones deciding in a year.

Anything that has run past seven weeks. A straightforward Spanish storage hire closes in four to six. Past that the brief is usually the problem rather than the market, and here the most common problem is a brief that still describes a solar role with storage attached.

The market right now

  1. 27 May 2026

Built almost nothing, approved an enormous amount

Battery capacity specifically stood at 96MW at the end of 2025 against a total storage figure of 3,427MW that is overwhelmingly pumped hydro. By May 2026 batteries had reached 221MW, with a single utility holding roughly 200MW of it through one hybridisation programme. Against that: 24,313MW authorised or under construction, and 15,080MW in permitting behind it.

  2. 17 July 2026

The filings tripled in a year

Thirty-four storage projects totalling 1.76GW were published in the Official State Gazette during the second quarter of 2026, up 112% in project count and 140% in capacity on the same quarter a year earlier. Almost all of them attach storage to renewable sites that already hold a connection point, which is a much faster route to delivery than greenfield.

  3. 20 March 2026

The permit rules changed to let storage in

Royal Decree-Law 7/2026 in March converted storage access and connection permits into flexible demand-side access permits, with a defined adaptation window once the regulator sets the detailed terms. That is the reform that made attaching a battery to an existing connection point practical rather than theoretical, and it is the single biggest driver behind the filings above.

  4. 25 May 2026

The blackout made batteries a system service

After the Iberian blackout of April 2025 the regulator created a framework requiring generation, demand and storage to provide reactive power and dynamic voltage control, and began paying for it. By May 2026 around 14.5GW was offering voltage control with setpoints, of which 6GW was renewable. A battery in Spain is now a grid stability asset with a paid service attached, not only an arbitrage play.

TalentPilot

We would rather you needed us less

Most agencies are built so that you call them again. The model only works while hiring stays hard for you, which means nobody selling it has much reason to make it easier.

We took the opposite bet, and not only out of principle. A business that hires well on its own stays a client for years and brings us the roles that are genuinely difficult. A business that depends on an agency resents every invoice and leaves the first time somebody undercuts us. The second kind of relationship is worth less and lasts less long.

So we built TalentPilot. Twenty-one tools across planning, attracting, hiring and keeping people: map the roles before they become urgent, see where the people actually are, write the advert properly, run a consistent interview, and know which of your new starters is at risk before they resign.

And one thing almost nobody has. Every week, the real reasons candidates said no. Not a summary. The actual objections: the money, the location, the counter-offer, the part of the role that put them off. Most businesses never find out, which is why they keep making the same hire the same way.

Everything on this page is one market on one date. Our clients see their own, continuously.

What is left for us is the work that genuinely needs a search. That is the part we are good at, and the part worth paying for.

See how TalentPilot works

How a search runs

You see it as we see it

Before we start
The brief and the target companies are agreed in writing. You know which businesses we are approaching and which we are not, before anyone is contacted.
Every week
The outreach, the response levels, where each person sits in the process, and the reasons anyone said no. The money, the location, the counter-offer, the part of the role that put them off.
When it stalls
You hear it from us. A search that has gone quiet is a conversation about the brief, not a report we delay until you ask.

What happens when you get in touch

A first call is a conversation about your hiring plan. Half an hour, with the consultant who runs this market for us.

We will tell you what we are seeing in your part of it: where the difficulty sits, which roles are moving and what people are actually being paid. You get that whether you decide to work with us or not.

If there is something we can help with, we will say what it would take and roughly how long. If there isn't, we will say so and point you at whoever is better placed.

No slide deck, no pitch, and nobody will chase you afterwards.

What we are seeing from the other side

The same searches, read from the candidate side.

Grid and voltage control engineers
If you have taken an asset through voltage control certification you are in the smallest and most valuable group in Spanish energy right now, and it is worth more in storage than it is in solar because storage is where the paid service sits.
Controls and SCADA specialists
The manufacturers entering Spain are hiring your discipline directly and will usually pay above a developer. Worth taking a call from both sides before deciding, because the career shapes are very different.
People who have delivered a battery end to end
Almost nobody in Spain has. If you have done it anywhere else, this is a market where that experience is genuinely scarce rather than merely useful, and the pipeline behind it is enormous.
Where it leads
Grid interface into technical directorship, controls into product or engineering leadership, and delivery into programme management across a portfolio. Spain is at the start of this rather than the middle, which is the better time to arrive.

Questions

Clear answers for the next step.

What battery storage roles do you recruit for in Spain?

Development and permitting, grid access and voltage control engineering, electrical and controls engineering, construction and project management, commissioning, asset management, and the commercial roles around capacity, system services and merchant revenue.

How much Spanish storage is actually built?

Very little. Batteries reached 221MW in May 2026 from 29MW at the end of 2025, against more than 24GW authorised or under construction and a further 15GW in permitting. Treat the pipeline as a queue. What makes it more credible than most queues is that the filings are overwhelmingly storage attached to sites that already hold a connection.

Why is storage suddenly a separate discipline here?

Because until recently there was nothing to staff. Spanish employers are now hiring battery specialists rather than solar people with storage in the job description, and the shortage sits above graduate level in grid, controls and commercial roles. The labour market has not caught up with the change.

Who are we competing with for these people?

Not only other developers. Four international battery and storage manufacturers are recruiting into Spain at the same time, mostly for grid, controls and commercial roles rather than construction. They can usually pay more and offer a career attached to a product rather than to one pipeline.

What did the blackout change for storage?

It turned a battery into a grid stability asset with a paid service attached. Storage is now expected to provide reactive power and dynamic voltage control, and by May 2026 around 14.5GW of capacity was offering it. That makes grid interface capability commercially valuable rather than merely a compliance cost.
