Battery storage recruitment in France

We recruit across battery storage in France, a market where the route to a faster grid connection is a deal rather than a queue position. Since October 2025 a battery can take a connection contract with fixed seasonal curtailment windows, accept that it will not be compensated when it is curtailed, and get connected sooner in exchange.

Whether that trade works depends entirely on whether the site’s revenue survives the schedule. That is a commercial and structuring judgement, not an electrical one, and it is the single most consequential decision a French developer makes.

The niches inside the niche

Battery storage is not one market

Developers, owners, optimisers, integrators and the consultancies advising all of them hire from separate pools. Whichever one you sit in, the hiring problem next door is not your hiring problem.

Developers and owner operators
You are competing for grid, planning and delivery people against solar and wind, and increasingly against data centres. The person who can move a site through the connections process is worth more to you than another developer.
Optimisers and route to market
The smallest and most expensive pool in the sector. A trader who genuinely understands storage rather than gas or power is a short list in any country, and everyone on it already knows what they are worth.
EPC, integration and commissioning
Where programmes actually slip. Commissioning sits in the gap between the developer, the integrator and the network operator, which is why it stays nobody’s job until the energisation date moves.
Technology and OEM
Controls, power conversion and SCADA engineering, plus the commercial people who sell into developers. It hires like a hardware business, which is why it loses candidates to sectors that pay on the same cycle.
Consultancy and owner’s engineer
The specialist grid and HV design engineers sit here rather than with the asset owners, which is why the same role appears in six cities at once when one firm needs another.

Our Approach

How we work here

Recruitment fundamentals travel. Markets do not. France has not given its connection bargain a job title, but unlike its charging market it has not buried the work either: the judgement sits inside senior connection-strategy and commercial storage roles, so you find those people by reading what a role actually owns rather than by searching for a term. We work in French, and we ask early whether a business intends to dispatch its own assets or contract that out, because in France three different answers to that are all live at once.

Before you brief anyone

Have you decided build or buy?

Storage is the one sector where the hardest hire depends on a decision the business has usually already made without calling it a decision. Do you run your own trading and optimisation, or do you contract route to market and manage the relationship?

The two answers need completely different people. One needs quantitative analysts, traders and the risk and treasury function around them. The other needs a commercial lead who can negotiate a toll or an offtake with an optimiser and hold them to it.

Both are legitimate and the market has not settled on either. What costs money is briefing for one while the business is actually doing the other, which happens more often than you would expect when the strategy changed and the job description did not.

Worth agreeing before anyone is approached: which model you are in, whether that is a permanent choice or a stage, and what you are asking this hire to build rather than run.

Why Hiring Here Is Different

Why hiring here is different from anywhere else

The connection decision is commercial, and nobody has given it a name.

Most markets make you wait for a connection. France will move you up the queue if you accept a curtailment schedule and give up the right to be paid when it bites. That is not an engineering decision, it is a structuring one: somebody has to work out whether the revenue stack survives being switched off between ten and six from March to October, and then negotiate the terms rather than the electrical specification. Search for that job and you will not find it. No French business advertises a role named after the mechanism. But unlike French charging, where connection work is genuinely invisible inside a generic technician family, storage has folded the judgement into visible senior roles: a developer hiring one person to own both connection strategy and the storage pipeline, an engineering group hiring a commercial storage lead whose brief is explicitly technical, economic and regulatory feasibility against negative prices and flexibility. The work is findable. The title is not. The second thing that makes France unusual is that it has not settled the build-or-buy question, and you can see all three answers at once. Two developers are hiring analysts into existing internal optimisation teams. One has tolled its site to a utility and has no open roles at all, which is what outsourcing dispatch looks like from the outside. And a utility is building its own aggregation desk to sell the capability to everyone else. Three positions on the same spectrum, all live, all dated to the same day. What that means practically is that a French storage brief is unreadable without knowing which of those three the business is. The same job title means a different hire in each.

Talent Scarcity

Where the pressure is right now

Connection strategy people who can price a curtailment bargain. The decision that sets a French project’s programme and its revenue, and it has no job title. The people who do it sit in senior roles owning both connection economics and the storage pipeline, which means finding them requires reading responsibilities rather than searching a term.

Commercial storage leads who can model the regulation as well as the market. The new tariff, the curtailment windows and the flexibility mechanisms are three separate commercial judgements with twelve-month commitments attached. A sales background without the regulatory half is not enough here and employers are explicit about that in their own adverts.

Optimisation and valuation analysts. Genuinely being hired into internal teams rather than outsourced, at more than one developer, including at entry level into functions that already exist. That is a market building capability deliberately rather than improvising it.

Construction and commissioning on transmission-connected sites. The first French battery on the 400kV network is in build, alongside a grid-forming trial with the system operator. Both are firsts, and the pool of people who have delivered either is essentially empty domestically.

Anything that has run past seven weeks. A straightforward French storage hire closes in four to six. Past that the brief is usually the problem rather than the market, and here the most common problem is a brief that does not say whether the business dispatches its own assets or contracts that out.

The market right now

  1. 11 May 2026

    Faster connection, bought with curtailment

From October 2025 the transmission operator began offering batteries connection contracts with predetermined seasonal curtailment windows: one blocking injection between 10am and 6pm from March to October, another blocking withdrawal in the morning and evening peaks from November to March. There is no right to compensation during those windows. In exchange the project gets a faster route to a connection offer. Demand for the first tranche outstripped supply roughly fifteen to one, so the regulator capped any single operator at 20% of the capacity freed.

  2. 4 November 2025

And a second optional bargain on tariffs

A new grid tariff from August 2026 pays batteries that charge in injection-saturated zones or discharge in withdrawal-saturated zones, with bonuses up to €69/MWh and penalties up to €76/MWh, worth an estimated €8,000 to €12,000 per MW a year on distribution networks. It requires a minimum twelve-month commitment once subscribed. Another asset-by-asset decision that has to be modelled before anyone signs.

  3. 2 June 2026

A real build is under way, and it is nameable

France’s largest single battery, 240MW and 480MWh, was commissioned in the Marne in June 2026. Under construction behind it: a 248MW and 496MWh project that will be the first French battery on the 400kV transmission network, a 92MW grid-forming trial in Brittany with the system operator, a 120MW site in the Somme due in service by the end of 2026, a further project of nearly 200MW in the Oise, and a 50MW site in Hauts-de-France for early 2027. That is roughly a gigawatt of named, dated capacity from four developers.

  4. 18 February 2026

The queue is roughly twice the realistic fleet

Connection requests sit somewhere in the 12 to 15GW range depending on which measure you use, and the figures do not reconcile because some count requests, some count granted access, and they sit at different network levels. Against that, both an independent analyst and the system operator’s own scenario land on roughly 6 to 6.2GW as the realistic 2030 fleet. Under half the queue is the planning assumption, and even that is a fivefold expansion on what is operating now.

TalentPilot

We would rather you needed us less

Most agencies are built so that you call them again. The model only works while hiring stays hard for you, which means nobody selling it has much reason to make it easier.

We took the opposite bet, and not only out of principle. A business that hires well on its own stays a client for years and brings us the roles that are genuinely difficult. A business that depends on an agency resents every invoice and leaves the first time somebody undercuts us. The second kind of relationship is worth less and lasts less long.

So we built TalentPilot. Twenty-one tools across planning, attracting, hiring and keeping people: map the roles before they become urgent, see where the people actually are, write the advert properly, run a consistent interview, and know which of your new starters is at risk before they resign.

And one thing almost nobody has. Every week, the real reasons candidates said no. Not a summary. The actual objections: the money, the location, the counter-offer, the part of the role that put them off. Most businesses never find out, which is why they keep making the same hire the same way.

Everything on this page is one market on one date. Our clients see their own, continuously.

What is left for us is the work that genuinely needs a search. That is the part we are good at, and the part worth paying for.

See how TalentPilot works

How a search runs

You see it as we see it

Before we start
The brief and the target companies are agreed in writing. You know which businesses we are approaching and which we are not, before anyone is contacted.
Every week
The outreach, the response levels, where each person sits in the process, and the reasons anyone said no. The money, the location, the counter-offer, the part of the role that put them off.
When it stalls
You hear it from us. A search that has gone quiet is a conversation about the brief, not a report we delay until you ask.

What happens when you get in touch

A first call is a conversation about your hiring plan. Half an hour, with the consultant who runs this market for us.

We will tell you what we are seeing in your part of it: where the difficulty sits, which roles are moving and what people are actually being paid. You get that whether you decide to work with us or not.

If there is something we can help with, we will say what it would take and roughly how long. If there isn't, we will say so and point you at whoever is better placed.

No slide deck, no pitch, and nobody will chase you afterwards.

The same searches, read from the candidate side.

Connection and grid strategy people
Your work decides whether a French project happens and when, and there is no job title for it, so it never appears in a search. Describe the decision you own rather than the process you follow, because that is the only way employers can find you.
Commercial storage specialists
The regulatory half of your knowledge is worth more than the sales half here, because the tariff and curtailment decisions carry twelve-month commitments and real money. Employers are asking for both in the same advert.
Optimisation and valuation analysts
France is one of the few European markets hiring these roles into developers rather than only into aggregators, and at entry level as well as senior. If you want to build the capability rather than inherit it, this is a good market to be in.
Where it leads
Connection strategy into development directorship, commercial roles into energy management leadership, and delivery into programme management. The first transmission-connected and grid-forming projects are being built now, and the people on them will be the reference hires for a decade.

Questions

Clear answers for the next step.

What battery storage roles do you recruit for in France?

Development and connection strategy, permitting, electrical and HV engineering, construction and project management, commissioning, asset management, valuation and optimisation analysis, and commercial roles across tariffs, flexibility and offtake.

What is the French connection bargain?

Since October 2025 a battery can take a connection contract with fixed seasonal curtailment windows, with no right to compensation during them, in exchange for a faster connection offer. Demand outstripped supply roughly fifteen to one on the first tranche, so any single operator is capped at 20% of the freed capacity. Whether it is worth taking depends entirely on the site.

Why can we not find anyone with that experience?

Because nobody has given it a job title. No French business advertises a role named after the mechanism. The judgement sits inside senior connection-strategy and commercial storage roles instead, so these people are findable by what they own rather than by what they are called.

Do French developers run their own optimisation?

Some do and some do not, and both models are live right now. Two developers are hiring valuation and optimisation analysts into existing internal teams. Another has tolled its site to a utility and has no open roles at all. A third party is building an aggregation desk to sell the capability to everyone else. The brief changes completely depending on which you are.

How big is the French pipeline really?

Smaller than the queue. Connection requests sit somewhere between 12 and 15GW depending on the measure, and the figures do not reconcile. Both an independent analyst and the system operator land on roughly 6GW as the realistic 2030 fleet, which is still a fivefold expansion on what is operating today.
