Battery storage recruitment in Finland
We recruit across battery storage in Finland, a market with around 1.6GW operating, nearly a gigawatt under construction and as much as 12GW in planning. For a country of five and a half million people that is a serious build.
What makes it unusual is that Finnish batteries have earned almost all their money from one buyer: the system operator’s own reserve markets. That is now changing while the fleet is still being built, which means the market is switching what it is for and who it needs at the same time.

The niches inside the niche
Battery storage is not one market
Developers, owners, optimisers, integrators and the consultancies advising all of them hire from separate pools. Whichever one you sit in, the hiring problem next door is not your hiring problem.
- Developers and owner operators
- You are competing for grid, planning and delivery people against solar and wind, and increasingly against data centres. The person who can move a site through the connections process is worth more to you than another developer.
- Optimisers and route to market
- The smallest and most expensive pool in the sector. A trader who genuinely understands storage rather than gas or power is a short list in any country, and everyone on it already knows what they are worth.
- EPC, integration and commissioning
- Where programmes actually slip. Commissioning sits in the gap between the developer, the integrator and the network operator, which is why it stays nobody’s job until the energisation date moves.
- Technology and OEM
- Controls, power conversion and SCADA engineering, plus the commercial people who sell into developers. It hires like a hardware business, which is why it loses candidates to sectors that pay on the same cycle.
- Consultancy and owner’s engineer
- The specialist grid and HV design engineers sit here rather than with the asset owners, which is why the same role appears in six cities at once when one firm needs another.
Our Approach
How we work here
Recruitment fundamentals travel. Markets do not. Finland prices its grid discipline rather than ranking it: where you site a battery changes what you pay to connect, permanently. We ask where a project sits relative to generation before anything else, because in Finland that single fact shapes the economics, the programme and therefore the hire. We work in Finnish and English both.
Before you brief anyone
Have you decided build or buy?
Storage is the one sector where the hardest hire depends on a decision the business has usually already made without calling it a decision. Do you run your own trading and optimisation, or do you contract route to market and manage the relationship?
The two answers need completely different people. One needs quantitative analysts, traders and the risk and treasury function around them. The other needs a commercial lead who can negotiate a toll or an offtake with an optimiser and hold them to it.
Both are legitimate and the market has not settled on either. What costs money is briefing for one while the business is actually doing the other, which happens more often than you would expect when the strategy changed and the job description did not.
Worth agreeing before anyone is approached: which model you are in, whether that is a permanent choice or a stage, and what you are asking this hire to build rather than run.
Why Hiring Here Is Different

Where the pressure is right now
Optimisation and trading people who can work beyond reserves. The forward hire. Finnish storage has been sold into the system operator’s reserve markets and that revenue base is being restructured, so the businesses that thrive are the ones that can earn on wholesale spread as well. Very few people domestically have done it.
Siting and connection strategy. In a market that prices its queue rather than ranking it, where you put the battery decides the economics for its whole life. The operator has been explicit that it wants storage co-located with generation, which makes early siting judgement worth more than downstream engineering.
Reserve market specialists, while they last. Genuinely valuable now and a narrowing base to build a career on. Worth hiring for the current revenue and being honest with the person about where the market is heading.
Construction and commissioning. Nearly a gigawatt under construction in a country of five and a half million people, which is a thin domestic contractor base for that volume. Delivery capability is the practical constraint on converting the pipeline.
Anything that has run past seven weeks. A straightforward Finnish storage hire closes in four to six. Past that the brief is usually the problem rather than the market, and here the most common problem is a role written for the revenue model the business has rather than the one arriving.

A large build for a small countryFinland has roughly 1.6GW of battery storage operational, nearly 1GW under construction and as much as 12GW in planning, on the sector trade body’s own dated figures from September 2026. The planning figure is a queue rather than a pipeline, and the system operator has said so plainly.

Where you site it changes what you pay, permanentlyStorage above 30MW connecting directly to the main grid must connect at the strongest nodes. A capacity fee for grid-connected storage took effect in August 2025, charged on combined consumption and production capacity: the system operator’s own example bills a 20MW facility on 40MW at €87.5 per MW per month, half the equivalent power plant rate. Finland disciplines its queue through price rather than through ranking.

The operator has said the queue would clog the gridPreliminary connection enquiries run into tens of thousands of megawatts, which the system operator has said publicly would clog the entire grid if built as applied for. Its stated preference is storage co-located with generation rather than sited opportunistically, because a decoupled battery forces the network to carry power in both directions rather than one. That is a clear steer about which projects will actually proceed.

TalentPilot
We would rather you needed us less
Most agencies are built so that you call them again. The model only works while hiring stays hard for you, which means nobody selling it has much reason to make it easier.
We took the opposite bet, and not only out of principle. A business that hires well on its own stays a client for years and brings us the roles that are genuinely difficult. A business that depends on an agency resents every invoice and leaves the first time somebody undercuts us. The second kind of relationship is worth less and lasts less long.
So we built TalentPilot. Twenty-one tools across planning, attracting, hiring and keeping people: map the roles before they become urgent, see where the people actually are, write the advert properly, run a consistent interview, and know which of your new starters is at risk before they resign.
And one thing almost nobody has. Every week, the real reasons candidates said no. Not a summary. The actual objections: the money, the location, the counter-offer, the part of the role that put them off. Most businesses never find out, which is why they keep making the same hire the same way.
Everything on this page is one market on one date. Our clients see their own, continuously.
What is left for us is the work that genuinely needs a search. That is the part we are good at, and the part worth paying for.
See how TalentPilot worksHow a search runs
You see it as we see it
- Before we start
- The brief and the target companies are agreed in writing. You know which businesses we are approaching and which we are not, before anyone is contacted.
- Every week
- The outreach, the response levels, where each person sits in the process, and the reasons anyone said no. The money, the location, the counter-offer, the part of the role that put them off.
- When it stalls
- You hear it from us. A search that has gone quiet is a conversation about the brief, not a report we delay until you ask.
What happens when you get in touch
A first call is a conversation about your hiring plan. Half an hour, with the consultant who runs this market for us.
We will tell you what we are seeing in your part of it: where the difficulty sits, which roles are moving and what people are actually being paid. You get that whether you decide to work with us or not.
If there is something we can help with, we will say what it would take and roughly how long. If there isn't, we will say so and point you at whoever is better placed.
No slide deck, no pitch, and nobody will chase you afterwards.

What we are seeing from the other side
The same searches, read from the candidate side.
- Reserve market traders
- Your skill is what Finnish storage has run on and the market underneath it is being restructured. Adding genuine wholesale optimisation now, rather than in two years, is the single most valuable thing you can do for your own position.
- Optimisation and quantitative people
- Finland is moving towards merchant optimisation while most of the domestic experience is in reserves. If you have run a battery against wholesale price anywhere in Europe, that is exactly the gap this market has.
- Siting and connection specialists
- Connection cost here is set by where you build and it lasts the life of the asset. Employers are only starting to realise that makes you a front-end hire rather than a technical one.
- Where it leads
- Trading into commercial leadership, siting into development, and delivery into programme management. With up to 12GW in planning against 1.6GW operating, the runway is long even after the queue is discounted heavily.
Questions
Clear answers for the next step.
What battery storage roles do you recruit for in Finland?
Development and siting, grid connection, electrical and HV engineering, construction and project management, commissioning, asset management, and the commercial roles across reserves, balancing and wholesale optimisation.
How do Finnish batteries make money?
Overwhelmingly from frequency and balancing reserves sold to the system operator rather than from wholesale spread or tolling contracts. That is effectively a single-buyer market, and it is being restructured, which is why the commercial capability this market needs is changing.
Why does siting matter so much here?
Because Finland prices its connection discipline rather than ranking it. Storage above 30MW must connect at the strongest nodes, and a capacity fee charged on combined consumption and production capacity has applied since August 2025. Where you build sets the cost for the life of the asset.
How real is the 12GW in planning?
Treat it as a queue. The system operator has said publicly that preliminary connection enquiries run into tens of thousands of megawatts and would clog the entire grid if built as applied for, and it has stated a clear preference for storage co-located with generation. That steer is a better guide to what proceeds than the headline figure.
Who should we hire first?
Somebody who can earn on wholesale as well as reserves. The domestic expertise is in reserves because that is what the market has paid for, and the revenue base is being restructured underneath it. Hiring for the model that is arriving rather than the one that exists is the difference here.
